Free postal entry: postcard or envelope, operator by operator
We checked the free postal entry terms of 73 UK prize draw operators. 34 want your entry on a postcard, and 28 of those rule out envelopes in writing. 11 accept a letter in an envelope, and 9 just say "by post". We could not confirm the other 19, mostly because their sites blocked our checker. Each row quotes the operator's own words and links to the page we read.

Why we checked
A reader emailed us in October 2026 with a complaint we had not seen raised before. Some operators only take free entries on a postcard, so the entrant's full name, home address, email address and phone number travel through the post on an open card that anyone handling it can read. Omaze and BOTB, they said, let them post a letter in an envelope instead. 7days Performance did not. Did anyone keep track of which operators do what?
We could not find anyone who did, so we read the terms ourselves.
- Omaze: the terms accept a letter in an envelope. "...the full name of the Grand-Prize Prize Draw you want to enter (for example, "Omaze Million Pound House Draw - London"), on either a postcard or letter." (terms)
- BOTB: the terms accept a letter in an envelope. "you must send a clear handwritten postcard or letter (mechanically produced entries are not permitted) to the address detailed in clause 25.1(c)" (terms)
- 7Days Performance: postcard only, and the terms rule out envelopes. "Send your entry on an unenclosed postcard by first or second class post to the Promoter" (terms)

Storm's own pages disagree. Its terms (clause 3.10) allow a letter or postcard, but the free entry box on each competition page asks for an unenclosed postcard. Until they match, the postcard is the safer choice.

"Not stated" means the terms do not say, not that the answer is no. Terms change, so check the operator's page before you post.
What the law says about free entry
A paid prize draw in Great Britain stays outside gambling licensing only if people can enter without paying. The test is in Schedule 2, paragraph 8 of the Gambling Act 2005. Each entrant must be able to choose between paying and sending "a letter sent by ordinary post", or another method "which is neither more expensive nor less convenient than entering the lottery by paying". The choice has to be publicised so that entrants are likely to see it, and the draw must not treat free entries differently from paid ones. Ordinary post means first or second class, without special delivery arrangements.
The Act says "letter". It does not mention postcards. We know of no court ruling or Gambling Commission statement on whether a postcard-only rule meets that wording, so we do not claim it breaks the law. We are not lawyers, and nothing here is legal advice.
The government's Voluntary Code of Good Practice for Prize Draw Operators (clause 2.4) repeats the ordinary post route and asks operators to show the free option clearly before you buy. It does not mention postcards either. Our guide to the code covers the rest of it.
The privacy question
A postcard can be read by anyone who handles it between the post box and the operator's PO box. Of the 60 operators whose terms list the details they want, 57 ask for a phone number, 57 for an email address and 17 for a date of birth, on top of your name and address.
It can be done differently. Omaze's rules make the phone number optional. The Birthday Draw has you set up the entry online, then post only a 16-digit code on a postcard or on the outside of a sealed envelope. The terms ask for the code, not your personal details.
UK data protection law sets two principles that bear on this. Article 5 of the UK GDPR says personal data should be "adequate, relevant and limited to what is necessary" (Article 5(1)(c), data minimisation), and handled with "appropriate security" (Article 5(1)(f), integrity and confidentiality). Whether an open postcard carrying a phone number squares with those is a fair question to put to an operator. We cannot answer it for you: we know of no decision by the Information Commissioner's Office on postcard entries, and this is not legal advice.
If it bothers you, you have a few options:
- Use operators whose terms accept a letter in an envelope. Filter the table.
- Write only the details the terms ask for, and nothing extra.
- Ask the operator in writing whether it will accept your entry in an envelope, and keep the reply.
- If you think an operator handles your data badly, you can complain to the operator first and then to the ICO.
How to enter a prize draw by post
- Find the free entry clause. Open the operator's terms and search the page for "postal" or "free entry". Each row above links to the page we read.
- Use the format the terms ask for. Plenty of general advice says to put your entry in an envelope, but 34 of the 73 operators we checked ask for a postcard. If the terms accept a letter, an envelope keeps your details out of sight.
- Write exactly what the terms list, clearly, usually in capitals: name, address and any contact details they require, plus the competition name and your answer if there is a question. Some operators match postal entries to an online account, so use the same details as your account.
- One entry per card or envelope. Most terms count a bundle of entries in one envelope as a single entry.
- Use an ordinary first or second class stamp.
- Post it early. An entry counts when it arrives, not when you post it, and a draw can close early if every ticket sells.
- Take a photo of what you sent and note the date. It helps if you need to chase.
Christmas post: when to send
Royal Mail publishes its last recommended posting dates for Christmas each year, a few days before Christmas Day for 1st and 2nd Class. Those dates are about arriving by Christmas Day. A free entry has to arrive before the draw closes, so for any draw closing between mid-December and early January, post a week earlier than you normally would.
How we checked
We started with the operators that have live draws on PrizeDrawsDaily, then added the ones readers look up most in Google, 73 in all. For each, we opened the operator's own terms and conditions, or its dedicated free entry page, on 20 October 2026. We copied the free entry clause and recorded only what it says. Where the terms did not say something, the row says "not stated". Where we could not load the terms or the wording was ambiguous, the row says "unclear".
Every row shows the date we read it, links to the source and quotes the sentence that decides the method. Terms change. If you spot one that has, email contact@prizedrawsdaily.co.uk and we will re-check it. The table is free to cite with a credit and a link to this page.
Free postal entry: FAQs
Can I send a free postal entry in an envelope?+
Only if that operator's terms allow it. Of the 73 UK operators we checked, 11 accept a letter in an envelope, including BOTB and Omaze. 34 ask for a postcard, and 28 of those rule out envelopes in writing. A further 9 only say to send it by post. An entry that ignores the stated format can be rejected, so check the operator's row before you post.
Is a postcard-only free entry route legal?+
The Gambling Act 2005 describes the free route as a letter sent by ordinary post, or another method that is neither more expensive nor less convenient than paying. It does not mention postcards. We know of no court ruling or Gambling Commission statement on whether a postcard-only rule meets that wording. We are not lawyers and this is not legal advice.
What details do I have to write on a postal entry?+
Whatever that operator's terms list. Nearly all ask for your name and postal address. Of the 60 operators whose terms list the details, 57 ask for a phone number, 57 for an email address and 17 for a date of birth. Many also want the competition name and your answer to the question, if there is one.
Does a free postal entry have the same chance as a paid ticket?+
It has to. Schedule 2 of the Gambling Act 2005 says the way prizes are allocated must not treat people who paid differently from people who entered by the free route.
How many free postal entries can I send?+
It depends on the operator. Most terms say one entry per postcard or envelope and count a bundle of entries as one. Some also cap free entries per person or per household for each competition. The limit column in the table gives each operator's rule.
18+ only. Set a budget for paid entries, and use the free route if you want to play without spending. Read our responsible play guide.
