Here's the part that surprises most people: you never legally have to pay to enter a UK prize competition. To stay the right side of the Gambling Act 2005 without a gambling licence, a paid competition must offer either a genuine free entry route — almost always a free postal entry — or a real skill-based question, and that free route must carry exactly the same odds as a paid ticket.
